I'm not really an anime fan. Why? It just doesn't really appeal to me. I'm part of the anime club at my college (maybe? I never sign in), so I've been exposed to a lot of different anime. On the whole I just don't enjoy it. I also tend to not enjoy some of the more popular stuff like Attack on Titan (which I feel goes too far in the grim and gritty) and Sword Art Online (which I feel is just a bad show). But I do in fact enjoy anime, so this week I'm going to be counting down my top 5 favorite anime/manga. So let's start of today with the Devil is a Part-Timer.
Disclaimer: This review will be based off of the English dub of the show. I do not care much for subbed anime.
I was going into this show not really expecting to enjoy it. The main reason for this is because it's a comedy, and humor is subjective. I've also watched other anime comedies before with overall bad results. So with all that in mind, I was expecting none of the humor to work for me because the jokes came from a different culture. Man, was I surprised by my actual reaction.
Plot:
The world of Ente Isla (a magical world full of magic, knights, and demons) is being taken over by the the demon kind Lord Satan, but the rest of the world isn't going to stand for this. They have found a hero themselves to fight the demon army. The Hero's attack even begins to work so well that they along with their party are able to confront the Satan and his general Aliciel in person. It even seems like the war will be ending that night until Satan creates a portal that sends himself and his general to safety. Sadly for them they end up in a world where demons and magic are only thought of as myths, our world. Now with a limited amount of magic Satan has now set his sights on earth as his next goal to concur, so he starts his grand conquest part time working at McDonald's (because money is important in this world and you need to buy food and drinks and pay rent and Lord Satan wants to buy a fridge so they can actually keep food in their one room apartment, etc.).
I'm really sorry to say this, but there isn't much I can really say about this show. Like I said, humor is subjective, and because this is a comedy the whole point of the show is to create humor which this whole show subjective. All I can really say to persuade you into watching this show and not watching this show is to either A: tell you the various situation I enjoy in the show (save for the main one said above) and see if you enjoy them which would be spoilers for the jokes or B: Tell you many reactions and thoughts to it over all. So I shall do the former.
My taste for humor tends to lean more into the cerebral forms of humor like wit and satire which I'm happy to say are done very well in this show. All the various characters work really well off of each other... and if I want to keep this spoiler free that is about all I can say. Once again, this is the major limit to reviewing a comedy series with no spoilers. I most likely won't be doing this again.
Anyway I give this show my recommendation. Watch the first two or three episodes, and if you're still not satisfied then don't watch another episode and come back tomorrow for a different comedy series.
